Peterson rushed for 1,500 yards with 21 touchdowns with the presence of a solid Brett Favre. If Favre retires, Peterson will once again be the main priority, and if that happens, watch out. Today the sun wil be a little warmer, the clouds a little less grey and the region a little happier.Today is Truck Day We’ve made it.NEXT PAGE. Even tired and beat up, Peter Forsberg is arriving here tomorrow as he will attempt to skate for his home country of Sweden. The Canuck fans here will see no fewer than seven of their players represent the countries of Canada, USA, Sweden, Finland, Slovakia, and Germany. All the slick skating defenseman has done is average 11 goals and 60 points his last three seasons. Purdue also returns All-Big Ten honorable mention RB Robert Bolden, an 1,100-yard rusher. The words “Purdue” and “Big Ten darkhorse” seem like they’ve been written every year for the past 10 years, but the Boilers have fallen short each time.

He also threw one of the worst interceptions in Super Bowl history late in the fourth quarter when he was attempting to make a comeback in the game. If they do, Brees will end up like Tony Romo last week: on his back most of the day.On defense New Orleans will try to stop the Vikings running game and pressure Favre into bad plays in the passing game. “If somebody says to me you can’t play, see ya.”The NHL has beendeveloping one of the best rivalries in all of sports between Ovechkin and Pittsburgh Penguin superstar Sidney Crosby. Crosby backs the Ovechkin stance.Read more at That’s why the NCAA needs to set the guidelines. At least wait until they are in high school.Recruiting for 2015 class of athletes is too early, because pretty soon they are going to be recruiting kids out of the womb. Just let the kid be. The Browns currently have running backs Jerome Harrison, James Davis, and Chris Jennings, but there is reason to pick Gerhart if he is sitting on the board when the Browns pick with their 92nd pick in the draft.Gerhart would give the Browns a big bruising back that can get the short yards on third down or at the goal line. HockeyThe only sport in the world in which a ref thinks it’s okay to allow the players to kick each other’s butt You can’t hate that. 2 Skiing in GeneralThe fashion, the speed, the agility. Peter’s (12-8, 7-3 MAAC) on Thursday, January 28.The Jaspers look to end their five game losing streak at Rider (11-11, 4-6 MAAC) on January 28.For more on the MAAC, follow Jesse Kramer on Twitter by clicking here ..

Even with the presence of Colston and Bush, there would still be plenty to go around in a cornucopia of fantasy goodness. Unfortunately, Meachem underwent knee surgery his rookie year and was unable to partake in any of that bounty. Chone Figgins and Milton Bradley were also added and both should be solid offensive contributors to a team that needs to score more runs. The bullpen is a bit of a worry but I have faith in the Mariners’ ability to overtake the Angels and win their first division crown since 2001.. And what does my post say? Something about Temple beating Nova if I remember correctly Just saying.Sorry, tangent Alright, let?s go Georgetown is a good team to base this off of ‘Nova won against Georgetown by five; Syracuse won by 17 That?s just how I can easily gauge this. He was a dominant force back in 2006, racking up 11.0 sacks that year However, he has disappeared since that breakout rookie year He had 6.5 sacks this year, and 21 tackles Again, I think he could be more productive than he is now. I couldn?t stand the man. As a Georgia Bulldogs fan I would rue the day when he would step between the sidelines of Ben Griffith stadium and wow the Gainesville faithful with another bruising run, or how he would throw one of his infamous jump passes to the tight end in the end zone. Most importantly, in recent years ?The World?s Largest Cocktail Party ? became nothing more than the annual Bulldog beat down as he ducked blitzing linebackers and threw haymakers in the form of 60-yard touchdown passes over an inexperienced cornerback. As a matter of fact, I couldn?t bear to watch as he broke the most hallowed record in SEC history when he passed our own UGA messiah Herschel Walker?s rushing TD mark against the Bulldogs.I cringed every time his name was mentioned by Fox?s Thom Brenneman as if he were Elvis in his prime. I rejoiced when his last attempt for championship glory was derailed by a Crimson Tide steamroller of a defense. I sang the praises of his critics who stated he wouldn?t succeed at the next level.Long story short, for four long years I couldn?t stand the name or sight of Tim Tebow .Now, I can?t respect the man enough. As many of you may now know, Tebow, in conjunction with the conservative Christian group Focus on the Family , is going to have an advertisement during the Feb.

He’s averaged 16+ wins and nearly 200 innings pitched, with 181 strikeouts, annually. It doesn’t seem to me Beckett will remain in Boston beyond this year. Also I love this picture because he is destroying Brett Favre!. Danny Briere took a high sticking penalty so the new look Devils power play took to the ice and cashed in on the man advantage. 9. The excellent defense and above average offense is what makes this the highest ranked Raider team. The Colts Franchise get its second team in with No.

The difference now is, he’s probably the coolest and likable figure within the organization. Â They live for the sweat, the pain, the euphoric acid that runs throughout their body. Well to them I recall the names of other players pegged with the same title?notably Demarcus Ware and Dwight Freeney. Marcus? 16 rebounds, four blocks, and two steals were very much welcomed.I?ve heard that good shooting is contagious; I guess the same goes for blocking shots. Where does the rotation’s odd man out open the season? Brian Cashman stands that Chamberlain or Hughes could start the year in Triple-A, but I doubt it. I learned and studied more about what to put in my body which led to forming our own supplement line.

Again, Houston and Dobbs could move here, but we are going to pretend that doesn’t happen and Dowtin and Hebron become the main guys.Georgia also has highly recruited T.J. We have potential to havefour or five hitters with 20 or more homers in our line-up.”Besides Santos, the team seems really happy to have Barajas aboard.Only time will tell if the Mets made the right decision signing Barajasand letting Santos go.. The first thing is for the Yankees to rid themselves of the Joba rules and let him pitch. “They’re an excellent offense and I still say they are the best offense I’ve seen because they’re so complete.”I think their offensive line is dominant, especially their inside three. Not that they’re destined to be great.Even if they are, it might not be at the positions they played in high school. Williams was selected as a Pro Bowl alternate after the season ended.2008 and 2009 saw identical stats from Williams?53 tackles and 12 sacks. While Houston as a whole is a bottom dweller, Williams is the anchor of the defense and is pushing the Texans toward a playoff birth. Hickson in return for the starting center for the West’s All-Star team.

George Best tended to drop himself by the device of going missing, one which he found increasingly compelling. Certainly Sir Matt Busby, who grew up with a generation of footballers for whom hard living was never seen as a deterrent to hard performance, was inclined to judge Best on his performance on the field rather than the bar or disco, and right up to almost the end Best tended to deliver his talents with both flair and commitment. What is a little puzzling about the Beckham situation is his reported suggestion that his current difficulty in getting into the United team is to do with rather more than football. Given the labyrinthine politics of Old Trafford, and Beckham’s delicate contract situation, it is obviously dangerous to be too emphatic about anything, but if Beckham did not really anticipate his exclusion from the team he must be in a serious state of denial. Either that or he has believed in the headlines that greeted his election as BBC Sports Personality of the Year and his favouritism in the race for the vote of World Footballer of the Year. Necessarily, Ferguson has to stay considerably closer to reality and his decision to discard Beckham could not be said to have been unflagged.Twice Beckham was pulled off the field at critical phases of defeats which landed on Old Trafford as psychological versions of the daisy-cutter bomb.

At Liverpool, where he scored a goal but performed wretchedly, he reached for an ice pack when he got to the sidelines. Against Chelsea, at a stunned Old Trafford, he merely shook his head when he was told his time was up. One flash of memory is a reminder of the time Bill Shankly called off the England World Cup hero Roger Hunt, who was then nearing the end of his days in the top flight. Hunt angrily threw his shirt to the ground, Shankly was severely unamused and the crowd booed.

Times change, certainly, but perhaps not to the point where the kind of dichotomy between Beckham’s performances for England and Manchester United can go unnoticed, certainly not by Ferguson, the chief victim of it.What he does with Beckham today against Middlesbrough, managed by his former coach Steve McClaren, is not the least intriguing aspect of a collision which should say quite a bit about the depth of United’s recovery in the 5-0 thrashing of Derby County in midweek.Clearly, a Beckham on something like his best form must be an element of any Ferguson hope of rescuing a season which has shown signs of going terminally bad. But, just as plainly, that was not the player the manager had been sending out for most of the season, a fact which we know now became intolerable two weeks ago when Beckham’s contribution to United’s losing effort against Chelsea was slight to the point of scandal.Much depends on Fergie’s reading of the “story of a friend” splashed across the front page of The Sun. Was it a coded message saying that Beckham was ready to display again for United the kind of passion he has regularly brought to the England cause? Or was it an ultimatum? If Ferguson reads it as the latter, hell could well freeze before Beckham reappears in a United shirt. My suspicion is that the ball could be returned to the England captain today, and with the certainty that the performance of a leading player will rarely have been so closely scrutinised. The manager’s position has been significantly strengthened by the facility with which Juan Sebastian Veron has occupied Beckham’s old ground along the right. At his first attempt there, against the Portuguese champions Boavista, the Argentinian produced a sharply improved performance, playing with bite and at times wonderfully effective delicacy. Nor does the fact that Veron is one of the game’s best dead-ball kickers deepen pressure on Ferguson for a recall of Beckham.

No doubt both players could be accommodated in the starting line today if the manager is convinced that the noises from the Beckham camp are (a) authentic and (b) come from a desire to play again for Manchester United rather than the expression of a giant sulk.Whatever happens on the team-sheet, United should know that there will no place for passengers against a team which, having looked so under-manned and under-motivated at the start of the season, are beginning to put some substantial flesh on the bones of McClaren’s reputation. Boro lost at Anfield last week, but not before displaying a massive improvement on their showing when they last visited Merseyside, which produced a bewilderingly limp performance against Everton back in August. Since then McClaren’s men have stiffened their resolve considerably, and Liverpool had to produce all of their work ethic to win the match.Ferguson, no doubt, will be demanding similar levels of energy today. In the victories over Boavista and Derby, United showed that at any anywhere near full strength they remain a prodigiously gifted football team. The big question now concerns precisely what constitutes a full-strength United? Dropping Beckham once was a gesture Three times was a statement Four times could be the beginning of a verdict One thing is certain. There is only one place for Beckham to resolve it and, despite his knack of generating positive publicity, it is not the front page of The Sun..

It was ranked 10th having finished in the bottom 20 of 3,062 companies in 2000 when it pulled the plug on Rover.. Deloittes & Touche yesterday became the last of the Big Five accountancy firms to bow to pressure and agree to split off its consulting business in the wake of the Enron scandal. Deloitte has poached three Andersen partners in the UK, Stuart Henderson, Paul Schofield and David Holstead, who all worked in its Cambridge office. John Connolly, senior partner and chief executive of Deloitte, said he still did not accept the need to separate the consulting business but market perceptions made it necessary.Andersen worked as both auditor and consultant to Enron, which hid massive debts off its balance sheet. It has been suggested that when a firm provides lucrative consulting services to a client, its audit work may be less vigorous.

“In the US in particular we have seen companies subject to criticism if they have appointed consultants from the same firm as their auditors. Seeing that, we had to move towards a split although our preference has always been to keep the firm combined,” Mr Connolly said.PricewaterhouseCoopers announced last week that it will spin off its consulting arm, while Ernst & Young has already sold its consulting business to Cap Gemini. KPMG has listed its US consultancy and its other consulting businesses are expected to follow. At Andersen, there was an acrimonious demerger of its consulting arm, now called Accenture, but it subsequently built up another consulting business – this will now also have to go.Deloitte, the number two firm worldwide, is said to be the only Big Five firm where its accountancy and consulting businesses actually got along well together. Rob Anderson, head of Edengene, a management consultancy, said: “There has been long-standing mistrust between the accountants and the consultants who wear the sharp suits and earn much more.”The accountants see the work of consultants as disruptive to the steady audit business they do for a client.

The consultants resent the pin-striped dull auditors who tend to hold the top positions at firm.”Mr Anderson said the consultants were usually keen to split their business off, as they could cash in through a flotation or sale The Enron affair has made that separation compulsory “I think the split is absolutely right. I struggle to think of any projects where [they] can work together. They can cross-market each other but working together is not in the interests of clients,” he said.Deloitte has 6,531 employees on the accountancy side of the business and around 1,000 in the consulting arm. The firm has yet to decide how and when it will split the business.. The price of gold surged above the psychological $300 barrier yesterday as worried investors dumped risky stocks in search of safe assets.

“However, I see no reason why it should slide back down to $280.”Wall Street brushed aside figures showing that the productivity of American workers grew faster than expected in the weeks after 11 September. By mid-session the Dow Jones had lost 0.5 per cent and the Nasdaq was down 1.5 per cent.Richard Batty, a quantitative strategist at HSBC, said there was a flight to quality assets but added that there was no strict pattern in terms of defensive or cyclical stocks.”It is a question of looking at stocks on a case-by-case basis,” he said.. City investment banks were aware of the irregular trading activities behind the $750m (£530m) fraud that surfaced yesterday at Allied Irish Banks. He sought to cover his losses by creating fictitious options contracts that appeared to provide a hedge against his positions.Senior figures within the City’s investment banks said that the large transactions coming out of a relatively small Baltimore-based player in foreign exchange trading had created suspicion among some of those banks that were counterparties to the transactions. “There is some level of responsibility with banks in the open market,” said one senior foreign exchange manager. “If I had been head of treasury I would have taken it upon myself to let AIB know that we were awfully appreciative of this business.”Said another: “Lots of big transactions coming out of Baltimore would have been odd. The banks must have known something was up.”Gary Kennedy, AIB’s finance director, said the company’s investigations into the fraud had yet to establish in the identity of all the counterparties to Mr Rusnak’s transactions.

One casino director reportedly said of Mr Zayat: “He has been known to spend £1m comfortably in an evening. The pair, Sir David and Sir Frederick, are said to be the 48th richest men in Britain. Many in the gaming industry are apprehensive about the details of the extravagance that will be revealed if the case does come to court. I know it’s wrong to lose money like this but if you have ever been to a casino you will understand what the atmosphere is like.” The atmosphere, that only a select few enjoy at London clubs such as the Ritz Casino, Crockford’s and the Colony Club, stems from their luxury and elegance. The finest wines, such as Chateau d’Yquem and Petrus flow freely; at Crockford’s in Mayfair, the dining room is stocked with free Krug champagne and lobster. The owners of the Ritz Casino, the Barclay brothers, are not short of money themselves. He said from his office in Cyprus “This is the only sin I have I have lost a lot of money.

The businessman, who has a wide range of interests, is being sued for the £2m plus £90,302 in interest.Mr Zayat appears to be sanguine about the prospect of a high-profile court case. The Ritz claims the cheques subsequently bounced. The casino has obtained orders freezing Mr Zayat’s bank accounts in London, the Isle of Man, Geneva and Cyprus. He visited the establishment 156 times between 1999 and 2001, losing nearly £10m.According to the writ, he gave the casino seven cheques in exchange for £2m of chips. In normal circumstances, it is unheard of for gaming establishments to risk their business by revealing even the name of their clients, let alone details of their wealth and spending.Court papers served on Mr Zayat at his apartment in the Grosvenor House hotel in Park Lane reveal he has gambled £21m at the Ritz alone since he became a member in 1998. Only those who can afford to lose vast sums at the turn of a card or the jump of a roulette ball are allowed to enter.
But a rare glimpse inside has been afforded by the Ritz Casino after it issued a writ against one of its biggest customers, known as Fat Man, for allegedly bouncing £2m of cheques.Syrian-born Fouad al-Zayat, a legend in the private clubs of Mayfair, has had his assets – which include a Boeing 727 jet and a £158,000 Rolls-Royce – frozen by the High Court The action is a sign of the degree of the Ritz’s annoyance. The doors of London’s most exclusive casinos are normally left firmly closed to the outside world.

She was wearing a black sleeveless T-shirt, a denim jacket, black trousers, and black leather boots Kent police have opened a murder inquiry.. A post-mortem examination earlier had been inconclusive.Previously the search for Danielle, who has not been seen since setting off last June for school in East Tilbury, Essex, had centred on marshland near her home. Her uncle, Stuart Campbell, 43, of Grays, Essex, has been charged with murder. The dead female is described as being aged between 14 and 20, with long fair hair. The body found on Friday at a cement works in Kent was not that of Danielle Jones, the Essex teenager who went missing nine months ago, police said yesterday.
The disclosure follows the results of tests on the female remains, which were found by workmen at the Blue Circle cement works in Northfleet, a few miles from where the 15-year-old disappeared. When I came to England, this country had a reputation for tolerance.”To remove a man from his job because he might have had a spliff or two is breathtaking in its hypocrisy.”. If it takes me to come out here and protest then I will do that.”Peter Koru, a DJ originally from New Zealand, said: “To many West Indians, cannabis is the drug of choice rather than alcohol. The police are not known for their liberalism.”Mr Sheedy added: “There is a massive crack-cocaine problem in this area and you need to target resources towards that to make it a safer place.”Nigel Foster, a supermarket security manager who has lived in Brixton all his life, said: “He’s looking at the bigger picture No one else has done that I’m really shocked and upset.

It included a $200 million CIA plan to arm anti–Taliban forces.”Why did it take eight months for us to receive this information? And what specific actions were taken by the White House in response?” Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle asked. “I’m not going to jump to any conclusions, but it’s hard to understand why the information was not released.”House Minority Leader Dick Gephardt posed a variation on the Watergate–era question: What did the president know and when did he know it?Turning the tables, Fleischer said today that Sen. Dianne Feinstein, , a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, told a TV interviewer in July that panel staff members had informed her of a “major probability” of a terrorist attack.”And that raises the question,” Mr Fleischer said, “what did the Democrats in Congress know And why weren’t they talking to each other?”. Israli soldiers raided the battle-scarred Jenin refugee camp yesterday, as Yasser Arafat’s aides said preparations had begun to hold presidential and parliamentary elections within six months. They ordered the family outside and when the family said it did not know where Mr Alhija was, the soldiers set the house on fire, the Islamic leader’s son said. Several Israeli tanks entered the city of Nablus, but left after several hours and made no arrests. In another part of the West Bank, an Israeli Arab woman was killed when gunmen opened fire on her taxi, and in the Gaza Strip, an armed Palestinian was killed by Israeli soldiers. The aides who announced that election preparations were under way said the polls would go ahead only if Israeli troops withdrew to positions held before the current fighting began in September 2000.A spokesman for Mr Arafat said the Palestinians also insisted that residents of traditionally Arab east Jerusalem be permitted to vote, as they were in the last Palestinian election in 1996.

The Palestinian Bureau of Statistics said it would take about 60 days to compile the list of 1.6 million eligible voters. (AP)* European diplomats have failed to agree on which EU countries will accommodate 13 Palestinians evacuated from the besieged Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, missing their own deadline of the end of this week. Although six countries have offered sanctuary, there was no agreement on a deal which would cover all 13 men, who are currently in Cyprus.. A decapitated and dismembered body believed to be that of the American reporter Daniel Pearl was found yesterday in a shallow grave on the outskirts of Karachi, Pakistan. Blood and hair samples have been sent for DNA testing, but Pakistani police said yesterday they were “quite sure” the body was Mr Pearl’s. There were bloodstains on the walls of the hut, and a chair identical to one seen in photographs of Mr Pearl that were sent to media organisations following his abduction.Four men are on trial for Mr Pearl’s murder, including the supposed “mastermind”, Omar Saeed Sheikh, a British national who was born and raised in Essex. But the latest breakthrough occurred after police arrested three more men on suspicion of involvement.

It was their confessions that led police to the secluded site.According to witnesses in the trial, Mr Pearl, South Asia correspondent of The Wall Street Journal, was abducted from his home in Karachi by Omar Sheikh while investigating possible links between Richard Reid, the British so-called “shoe bomber”, and Islamic militants in Pakistan.Several days later, e-mails were sent to international media organisations demanding the return to Pakistan of Pakistanis being held by the US at Guantanamo Bay. Photographs were attached to the e-mails showing Mr Pearl in captivity. In February, the fears of Mr Pearl’s friends and his heavily pregnant wife, Mariane, were confirmed when a video was delivered to the US consulate in Karachi showing Mr Pearl being killed.. A thousand British troops were yesterday once again in the mountains of south-east Afghanistan hunting Taliban and al-Qa’ida forces after the Australian SAS and US warplanes killed a number of men regarded as hostile fighters. But it was the second British operation, after Ptarmigan, to have ended without a shot being fired.American sources said yesterday that the British had insisted on being the lead force to react to the Australian firefight, although the official allied Quick Response Force was the American 101st Airborne. However, there were several hours delay between the Australian clash, the US bombing, and the Royal Marines arriving. At Bagram, the allied headquarters, Brigadier Roger Lane, the British task force commander, said: “The priority will be destruction or capture of the terrorists in the area. We will also aim to destroy enemy infrastructure we may find.”Local tribal leaders and Afghan security officials said that two clans, the Sabari and the Balkhiel, were skirmishing over a land dispute on a mountain near the town of Khost at the time of the allied action.

Soon afterwards 10 people on both sides were killed in a bombardment by US aircraft.Other tribal leaders said the bombing began when shots were fired, according to tribal custom, during a wedding at the village of Balkhiel. The Australian forces spokesman, Brigadier Mike Hannan, said in Canberra that special forces had been in two firefights. “The first element came into contact yesterday afternoon and was involved in a firefight.” No Australians were killed or injured, but at least one suspected enemy soldier was killed in a gun battle that lasted several hours, before the Australians withdrew. A few hours later, a second SAS group trying to link up with the first came under fire, about four miles from the original clash. “They were able to fight their way through and join up, supported by air support from the US air force, and then they were able to move to an area of safety,” Major Hannan said..

He added that while recent survey evidence had indicated a slowdown across all parts of the economy in June this was probably due in part to the double Jubilee bank holiday and the World Cup. “If you look at the second quarter, the surveys have been pretty good and GDP for that period could be between 0.7 and 1.0 per cent, which would be above trend.”He said that, assuming the quarterly surveys from the CBI and British Chambers of Commerce were strong, the Bank would hike in August.Geoffrey Dicks, chief economist at Royal Bank of Scotland, said the UK had embarked on economic recovery at a time of full employment.”Wage pressure, already evident in parts of the economy, is likely to spread,” he said. “Higher interest rates will be needed to contain the threat.”Certainly recent reports from Incomes Data Services and the Industrial Relations Services, two acknowledged pay analysts, have reported a rise to 3 per cent from 2.5 per cent in average wage deals over the past few months.Unemployment is close to record lows and more people are in work than ever before. Average earnings levels – a key marker for inflation-watching – is subdued but that is mainly driven by the one-off collapse in bonuses.Meanwhile, the Government is embarked on a major spending programme that will undoubtedly boost public sector employment and wages further. Philip Shaw, chief UK economist at the finance house Investec, said that Bank’s new forecasts, which are prepared ahead of next month’s meeting would uncertainly point towards the risk of higher inflation.

Recent comments from Mervyn King, the hawkish deputy governor who was alone in voting for a hike last month, imply that it could show inflation as high as 3 per cent.”Under this scenario the committee would feel obliged to raise rates at its August meeting, to push the forecasts back on track Indeed this is just about still our central case,” he said. “But this is contingent on equity turmoil dying down which looks far from a sure fire bet at present. Concerns over a runaway boom in the housing market might be shelved until another day, or in extreme circumstances, perhaps even another year.”Mr Rubinsohn said concerns over the housing market were overdone. “People talk about the need to prick the bubble but if you did succeed in doing that I am not sure there’s an awful lot left to keep the economy growing.” He said there was a deeper issue about the balance between the worries over growth and concerns over inflation. “If in 12 months we look back and have to say we misread the signals then we could say ‘OK it was a mistake [not to hike rates] and we have ended up with slightly higher inflation,” he said “But the great worry is .. repeating the Japanese deflation. We thought that had gone away but now we see even the Fed is worried about that.”In turn, Mr Saunders questioned whether the focus on falling share prices had been overdone, especially as the latest figures showed a marked increase in business profitability. He said while 60 per cent of the earnings per share of the FTSE-Allshare companies were derived from overseas, that figure was half that for overall business profit. At the end of the day, the near-term path for interest rates will be determined by whether the Bank chooses to take a risk over growth or inflation. While Mr Rubinsohn sees a possible threat of deflation others, such as John Butler at HSBC, fear the Bank is taking a risk by not responding to clear hints that inflation is rising above target.

“A rate rise is always unpopular, probably more so now than ever,” he said. “But if the Bank delays the hike in rates, it increases the risk of future price instability.”It is this balance of risks that will determine whether households can celebrate New Year’s Eve with the same borrowing costs as they did a year earlier.. The world’s most famous actor suddenly has the world’s most famous braces. “My mouth wasn’t closing properly,” Tom Cruise explains of his celebrated orthodontic procedure. But, braces or not, the wattage of Cruise’s famous smile, is as dazzling as ever as the unshaven actor bounds into the suite of a hushed Upper East Side hotel to talk up his latest film. And he’s just as charming as you’d expect from all those testimonials from fellow actors and past directors who swear the man Time magazine dubbed “Hollywood’s Eagle Scout” is never anything but punctual, polite and prepared. The one-man charm offensive, who’s about to turn 40, keeps wiping that smile off his own face with movies that are altogether darker, edgier and more complex than we have any right to expect from the biggest box-office attraction of the age.

But musically the piece is more distinctive than substantial, just asits model often is.Very much unlike Simon Holt’s Canciones, a hauntingly intense and exquisitely imagined setting of poems about love and death by or derived from Lorca. The instrumental word-painting is fully the equal of Lorca’s astonishing imagery, and even with the orchestra in full view one is frequently at a loss to work out exactly how Holt achieves these sounds. One is decidedly, here, in the dream world of Lorca’s bleeding mountain sides and perfumed knife blossom. There’s nothing dreamy, though, about Jean Rigby’s immaculate singing and the Birmingham playing, both of which were of needle-point refinement.. *

Chris “Coco” Mellor has been around the club scene for about a decade, as journalist, producer and, more recently, co-presenter of Radio 1’s late-night Friday show The Blue Room. As a performer, he’s still best known, perhaps, as one-third of Coco Steel and Lovebomb, whose “Feel It” was a turntable hit back in 1992.

These days, Coco has chilled out a bit – who hasn’t? – and constructs relaxed, downtempo grooves in similar vein to Chicane, albeit less orderly and anthemic; where Chicane leans toward Robert Miles, Coco leans more on The Orb – “My Sunset” could be the baby sister of “Little Fluffy Clouds”, with its innocent female narrator eulogising airily about a meteorological phenomenon. The Erik Satie piano figures in “Falling (61)” and “Gemini” give an indication of the moods Coco deals with on Next Wave: elegant and unhurried, sliding gently into understated dub spaces. Like many a house producer, he calls on guest vocalists to bring his pieces to life, though not the voices you might expect. The actor Patrick Bergin and the writer Iain Banks lay spoken recitations over “Only Love” and “Dreaming”, while Nick Cave brings cabaret to a warm, glowing version of the Velvet Underground’s “Sunday Morning”. Busiest of all, though, is Belle & Sebastian’s Monica Queen, oozing sensual languor on “Hazy Lazy” and “All of My Best Friends”, but somewhat overwrought on “Before You Broke My Heart”.. *

Before he became radio’s pre-eminent champion of world music, Charlie Gillett wrote the definitive account of American pop’s regional development in The Sound of the City. Not that the absence of such familiar names detracts from the overall impact: given the chance to hear “LA Woman” and “Heartbreak Hotel” again, or to discover such lost gems as Travis Wammack’s “Scratchy” and Garnet Mimms’ “A Quiet Place”, I know which I’d go for.

*

It’s the big superstar DJs that still command the attention of media and punters alike, but outside the utilitarian realm of the nightclub dancefloor, the house-music boom has quietly wrought a revolution in home-recording that may prove of more long-lasting influence. Ironically, given the DJs’ reliance on analogue vinyl, the DIY scene is primarily digital, with bedroom sonic alchemists across the country cutting and pasting music together inside samplers on their computers, and devising new techniques to replace such hands-on methods as scratching. Boom Bip, aka Bryan Hollon, is one such bedroom boffin; Seed to Sun, his debut album, follows a single, “Circle”, made with rapper Dose One, which raised eyebrows a few months back. Like a lot of new digitalia, it plays fast and loose with dancefloor imperatives, switching beats in mid-stride and mischievously seeking to confound expectations at every turn. Wheezing techno shapes ooze over electro breakbeats, looped fragments of violin and smatterings of piano notes circle around sampled string bass lines, and, occasionally, one of Bip’s rapper chums pops up to mutter darkly, like Buck 65’s surreptitious insomniac observations on “The Unthinkable”: “Everywhere I still see ghosts/The selected works of Karl Marx/The greatest hits of Bill Monroe.” Throughout, the elements are electronically slashed and shredded with a playful enthusiasm that pulls the producer ever further away from the club scene, towards more experimental territory: in the case of “Popsicle”, the digitally mangled phone conversation and minimal keyboard figure recalls the work of US avant-gardist Robert Ashley Remarkable..

You can even see this in the area where the star system has up to now ruled unchallenged. Much cheaper to use unknowns, as in Big Brother, and entice them to work for a brief flash of stardom than to have to hire expensive trained actors. What people are paid is a market, and ultimately the market is self-correcting – though that may take a long time Pay differentials in the 1970s were unsustainably low. Many people in responsible jobs went on doing so out of a sense of duty, resenting their relatively low pay and getting out when they decently could. Others went abroad. Now differentials may be unsustainably high – or at least unnecessarily high to attract people into jobs. If you have a large excess of people wanting to do a job at a particular rate, and able to do it, then the rate is too high. There are probably quite a lot of people in well-paid jobs whose replacement will earn less than they do.

For one of the harsh lessons of the downturn is that there are people who are simply not worth their salaries.A great sea change just beginning to become evident? I’m not sure. But I am sure that there are lessons about pay that have been learnt in the past two years that will linger long after growth picks up – as it will
More from Hamish McRae. The death has been announced of summer 2002. It was not totally unexpected, as summer had been in a weak state for some time. After a painful last few days, summer 2002 finally expired last week, surrounded by relatives, loved ones and representatives of the major insurance companies and travel agencies.

At the memorial service, many speakers remembered fondly that summer 2002 had been playfully unpredictable. Sometimes there were thundery periods, but then everything would clear up. The World Cup in Japan and South Korea had been one of her finest achievements Since then she had never been quite the same again

The death has been announced of summer 2002. Since then she had never been quite the same again.
And then came the announcement that everyone had been half-expecting. Court No 1 at the Old Bailey is becoming the drop-in entertainment centre of London.

We also meet a female “fraudster of genius” who impersonates an English property mogul, Julia Kirkbridge. Archer’s names are of interest: this leading lady is two letters away from the Daily Telegraph journalist-turned-Tory MP, Julie Kirkbride. Two courtroom scenes climax in dazzling defence speeches that lead to the failure of malicious charges against noble, falsely indicted defendants. Most poignantly, the novel swarms with benign father-figures who bless the heroes and commend them for playing by the rules. In this fantasy of upper-crust Wasp life, the clean-cut good guys come first without any need for make-believe or subterfuge. Sons of Fortune is a dream of protective fathers professional, more than biological and of dutiful, guileless sons. It takes us nowhere near a credible America of law, politics and business.

But it does allow a privileged visit to that most exotic of locations: Jeffrey Archer’s mind.A TASTE OF ‘SONS OF FORTUNE’ …”Are you sure,” asked Nat quietly.”Yes, I am,” replied Rebecca.”Then why must we get married as soon as possible,” said Nat.”Why?” asked Rebecca. “We live in the Sixties, the age of the Beatles, pot, and free love so why shouldn’t I have an abortion?”"Is that what you want?” asked Nat in disbelief.”I don’t know what I want,” said Rebecca “I only found out this morning I need some more time to think about it.”Nat took her hand. “I’d marry you tomorrow if you’d have me.”"I know you would,” said Rebecca squeezing his hand, “but we have to face the fact that this decision will affect the rest of our lives. We shouldn’t rush into it.”"But I have a moral responsibility to you and our child.”"And I have my future to consider,” said Rebecca.”Perhaps we should tell our parents, and see how they react?”"That’s the last thing I want to do,” said Rebecca.

“Your mother will expect us to get married this afternoon, and my father will turn up on campus with a shotgun under his arm. No, I want you to promise you won’t mention that I’m pregnant to anyone, especially our parents.”. Another Serota looks set to make her mark on culture. Anya, daughter of Tate director Sir Nicholas, will relaunch the fiction list at the venerable John Murray, now part of Hodder Headline.
